Good! We agree that Jones is a paper tiger! That means he should be easy for politicians to say NO to without running scared from him. Otherwise he's not a paper tiger. What does it say about the Media Advisers that our Pollies employ that the advice is to "run scared" of the Parrot ? I mean, you can laugh at Abbott ( or Peta ) to run scared of Faine, but for the PM to run scared of a piece of fluff like Jones ?

Freedom Furniture, Mercedes-Benz, Challenger and Woolworths all moved quickly this morning to dump 2GB. "From time to time we have had advertising during this program, however, this morning we have made a decision to suspend this advertising," Woolworths said in its Facebook statement. "Woolworths in no way supports the comments made at that function. We thank you all for your feedback." Macquarie desperately needs these advertisers after its shares fell 36% in the last 12 months from $1 to 64 cents. The business only owns two major radio stations after Melbourne's MTR station was placed in administration, making 2GB and Jones crucial to its success. MTR proved to be a significant drain on Macquarie's resources as it was forced to assume operating costs and losses of $5.5 million in the 2011-12 financial year, dragging net profit down from $5.9 million to $2.3 million. The audience and advertiser backlash against Jones' comments is particularly dangerous for Macquarie as the business has few other revenue levers to pull. The sponsors' actions will also hurt Jones' own hip pocket as his company Hadiac was issued with 1.3 million shares on September 12, making him the fourth biggest shareholder in Macquarie. However Bob Peters, of Global Media Analysis, told SmartCompany he did not think the crisis would prove to have any more impact than "a short-term blip". "It's a controversial right wing comment and that panders exactly to Alan Jones' audience and to the 2GB listeners," Peters says. "The bulk of the audience are over 55 and more sympathetic to right wing views; if you are left wing and over 55 you listen to the ABC." Although earnings before tax from Macquarie's two Sydney stations was $15.2m in 2011-12, down 12% from last year, it was still the second best result ever and Peters expects profits to improve this year. "This year should be a year of recovery for them as they are a very high rating station. I don't have a magic crystal ball but I think the most likely outcome is that the Sydney radio market will experience single digit growth and Macquarie should get its fair share of that and profits should go up," says Peters. Earnings before tax for 2012-13 for Macquarie has been forecast by its executive chairman at $15 million, which would give it a net profit of around $8.5 million. This means revenue would have to fall at least 30% and costs remain steady to threaten Macquarie's profitability. Peters is also unconcerned at the advertisers deserting 2GB. "Look at what happened with Kyle Sandilands and Austereo network, there was very little damage," he says. "It won't stick."

I wouldn't be surprised if in the New Year Alan Jones still pops up on 2GB, his snake oil will still attract bucketloads of corporate advertising $$$, and nothing much will have changed.
Doubtless Jonesy is thinking: "This too will pass ..."
He might be right. Scoundrels can and often do prosper ...

More advertisers have pulled the pin on Alan Jones 2GB show overnight and this morning. Perhaps all his bluster about "business as usual" will turn out to hurt him financially after all. Yeah, he'll survive. A small dent of $80,000 per day for a short time is all this is doing. (Plus, an expected further dent in Abbott's standing as a spin-off.)

I agree that Tony Abbott would probably prefer that Jones hadn't made those remarks. It's a distraction he didn't need and it has completely swamped what would otherwise have been a very favourable development for Abbott which was Lindsey Tanner's book. If the Jones story hadn't broken then the major political story would have been that the Kevin Rudd ouster was back in the news. Jones and his motormouth made sure that story got buried. Liberal strategists wouldn't be pleased ...
Perceptions are everything in politics. It's why I've been so critical of Gillard in the past. How an individual or an issue is perceived in the electorate matters. John Howard understood that and up until a month ago Tony Abbott seemed to understand it a helluva lot better than Julia Gillard. Understanding how things are perceived means that the political task is to get everyone talking about the other side. Make the other guy the issue. And up until recently Julia Gillard has been the issue. But over the past month or so there has been a shift, and the shift has been a perceptual one. Now it's Tony Abbott and how he doesn't get on with women. And what's dangerous for Tony Abbott is that every time a major figure from the fruitcake far right sprays his misogynistic snake oil in puplic, it ends up drenching Tony Abbott. It's a smear campaign, sure. Of course it is. It's been a smear campaign ever since the 2010 elections - except that the smear had been directed against Julia Gillard. Now we're seeing blowback and Abbott deserves it.
Not so sure this will lose him the unlosable election though. But I tend to agree with the Australian that the decks could be being cleared for a March election.

Perhaps short lived, yet nice to see Jones' 2GB being hit where it hurts. MACQUARIE Radio Network is continuing to stand by Alan Jones, despite an advertiser exodus costing an estimated $500,000 a month and Gerry Harvey calling for the broadcaster to be reprimanded. Retailer Harvey Norman yesterday joined at least 34 advertisers in withdrawing support for 2GB's Alan Jones breakfast show, as the company's market value fell $3 million. St George, Honda, Hyundai, McDonald's, Ford, 7-Eleven and Mazda are some of the big advertisers to respond to an online petition started by a Sydney student, which was on target to collect 100,000 names last night. The exit of so many major advertisers will cost the show at least $500,000 a month in lost advertising revenue, according to media buying agency estimates obtained by The Australian. I don't think that the 2gb and Jones issue will go away, what might have happened in the past (where these thing blow over after a week or so), does not apply anymore. We live in a Social Media world, and in that world, it's the left who are the most savvy. The campaign against Jones is being run by both the Young and the Tech Savvy, and guess what ? They ain't gunna let this one go. All those advertisers that have pulled the plug are on notice, as soon as any of them crawl back onto the Jones show, they can expect the backlash, on their "facebook, twitter, and emails.
As far as the polling goes, the Momentum is there, unless the Opposition changes leaders, and soon, then it will soon find that it is terminal. Abbotts gone, don't worry about that, it's just how long before the Fibs realise that they are nearing that point of no return.
