I just watched it on the ABC news website. I think it was the best speech I've heard her give. It was Abbott who raised the issue of misogyny and sexism in relation to Peter Slipper and attempted to link it to Gillard, and Gillard was happy to return fire by saying "OK let's talk about misogyny and sexism - yours!" and followed it up with a detailed catalogue of Abbott's misogyny and sexism - both by word and deed.
What happened on the Opposition benches was extraordinary. They were stunned into silence. Julie Bishop was the most interesting. When Gillard began speaking, Bishop immediately began yelling across the chamber. But as Gillard exposed Abbott's hypocrisy and laid bare his systematic misogyny and sexism, not needing to go back 30 years ago but back from when he was a minister in the Howard Government and consistently through to how he has behaved as Leader of the Opposition, Bishop stopped interjecting and lapsed into a stony silence. So did Tony Abbott and so did Christopher Pyne. No catcalling from Julie Bishop, no sledging from Tony Abbott and no vexatious points of order from Christopher Pyne. It was a comanding performance from Julia Gillard who demonstrated powerfully that while there is a concern about Peter Slipper and while there are issues about this bloke, the last person with the moral authority to attack Peter Slipper on issues of misogyny and sexism would be Tony Abbott.
But Slipper is stuffed. He should do the decent thing and resign. He shouldn't force the Parliament to sack him.

Was a fired up speech by Gillard, albeit I have only caught a fraction on the radio it was low shot by Abbott saying the government "should already have died of shame"....what a crud, if Slipper had not of taken the speekers job, they would not have said anything about the bloke that was spawned by the conservative party.
Anyhow Slipper has resigned...on with the show..

Good that Slipper has resigned. It takes the heat off Gillard - not having to sack him, it also denies Abbott the actual victory of winning a vote in parliament to remove him. What I found particularly disgusting was Abbott sinking again to the bottom of the cesspit with his carefully thought out phrase: "DIE OF SHAME" The man has no conscience, no decency. He is by far, the worst exponent of political thuggery I have ever seen. After his Luke-warm "condemnation" of Alan Jones... I really hope this latest example of despicable behaviour by Abbott comes back to bite him.

Ms Gillard's Speech was brilliant. She had Monkeyboy skewered and was twisting it for good measure. I saw a clip on the ABC website, and the PM had the Opposition rattled, they had a rabbit in the spotlight look. Abbotts comment that the Government had "died of shame" was a disgrace, and no, his protesting on Sydney Radio (where else?) that he simply "forgot" about last weeks furor simply doesn't cut it. C'mon Talcum, it's yours if you dare. As far as Slipper goes, I wouldn't be claiming it as a win, if I were Monkey, he has driven yet another vote to the Government side. That and "Slippery Pete" knows where all the skeletons are buried.

Pim, dunno if you caught QandA last nite, I'm told that Kate Ellis was subjected to some pretty salacious behavior from the some of the Panelists. Disappointing if true, then with Pyne and Pies on the panel, what can you expect ?

Evidently, the speech has gone viral. As a click on the link to the Daily Kos, above, will testify. Seems Ms Gillard might have struck some sort of chord.

As for the numbers game... Things don't look all that bad for Gillard... PETER Slipper has backed Labor in his first vote since resigning as Speaker, despite Tony Abbott pressuring the independent to side with the Coalition. Of course, Slipper may well vote with the LNP on many occasions, but as the first vote indicates, he may well vote with the Government too. Not only did Abbott lose Slipper's vote when Slipper was speaker, he now faces the prospect of having him vote with Labor. Well may the colour drain from Abbott's face.

This has gone really viral. What is interesting is that the OS reportage is making the Press Gallery look narrow and out of touch. Ms Gillard really seems to have struck a chord with women world-wide, if thats translated here, into votes, then Tony might be in real trouble.

I watched Q&A and Kate Ellis gave a brilliant performance and it was Pyne and Joe Ludwig who rudely interupted her speech by shouting at each other while she was speaking.
Piers Ackerman was on the program as well, why anyone gets that drongo on for anything beats me....the bloke is nothing "but" a fool.
Could only stomach watching only a little over a half of the show...I wanted to snot that greasy Pyne and Ackertruckface ponce.
