Occupy mum divorces, gives up custody of kids

A housewife who made headlines last year after abandoning her family to join the Occupy Wall Street movement in New York is now divorcing her husband and giving him custody of their four children. But the 39-year-old mother will also enjoy a $82,000 payout from her husband, a banker. Stacey Hessler walked away from her family's white-picket-fence home in DeLand, Florida, last year to protest outside banks in Manhattan's financial district – including Bank of America, where her husband Curtiss Hessler once worked as a financial adviser before moving to a local bank in Florida. She spent nights at a time sleeping outside in Occupy camps or staying at a hostel in Brooklyn, eating handout meals, according to media reports. She twisted her hair into dreadlocks, donned a bandana and began wearing hippie-style T-shirts with logos like "Make Love, Not War". At one point dramatic photos emerged of Mrs Hessler being hauled away by three police officers for blocking a road near the New York Stock Exchange during a protest.
The news media picked up her story she began to face criticism that she was a bad mother. "Military people leave their families all the time, so why should I feel bad?" Mrs Hessler told the New York Post. "I'm fighting for a better world." She later said: "My mother told me I was being very selfish." Mrs Hessler describes herself on her Facebook page as a "radical unschooling mom of four, midwives assistant, roller derby queen, rockstar musician, activist, dreadlock princess, African bee keeper, organic vegan freak. When the Post asked her about a YouTube video showing her passionately kissing another protester during an Occupy "Kiss In" on Valentine's Day in February, she reportedly laughed and said: "I actually made out with four guys". The newspaper quotes an Occupy Wall Street source as saying Mrs Hessler's devotion to the movement was behind the divorce but that she was unfazed by the breakup of her 19-year marriage.
The divorce settlement, filed on October 16, cites "irreconcilable differences" for the split. The papers list her occupation as "protester" and her employer as "Occupy Wall Street". Her annual salary is listed as $0. Her 43-year-old husband, whose earnings were listed as $65,000 a year, retains ownership of their three-bedroom house and gets sole custody of their children – an 18-year-old boy and three girls, aged 16, 14 and eight. Mrs Hessler was awarded $82,000 from her husband's retirement fund and savings account as part of the settlement. Her children can see her any time they wish but only in a "safe environment," the settlement states.

I find this to be a fascinating piece of tabloid "journalism". In fact we shouldn't call this piece "journalism". It's propaganda of the type that Alan Jones would use in his daily rants on the theme of "What's happening in the world today that we can get all upset about?"
But make the effort to unpack it. The target is, of course, the Occupy Movement, and the objective is to discredit it, but what's the strategy? The strategy, gentle comrades, is to use gender as the vehicle. Here's a woman who had it all - marriage, home, breadwwinner husband with a steady job, and children. She throws it all away to live the life of a hippy and to attack the very basis of God-ordained capitalism. And in so doing she rejects the most sacred of all female roles: that of being a wife and mother.
This is the sort of stuff they love over on NTB1 and I'm surrprised they haven't tumbled to it yet. Stellar would shriek blue murder, Matt would call on all of us to pray for her, garfield would disappear in a cloud of obscenities about "f*ckn leftie hippies", the Colonel would mutter dark imprecations about the "lefty bint" and Skippy would bray to all and sundry that this is proof positive about where all this lefty stuff will lead - the break-up of families, the abandonment of children, and that there's a sinister lefty conspiracy to turn s all into vegan tree-hugging muesli-munching atheist Muslim homosexuals ... or somethin!
